Introduction and Conclusion
I am going to fuse my intro and summary this Round to save characters.
My issues with Pro's case are as follows: (I assume Pro is a 'he').
- He oversimplifies characters to 'put into a box' that then enables him to work with the strawman simplified character. He does this both in favour of Lalo (LS) as well as against (GF) and Saul Goodman (SG).
- He has arbitrarily decided what defines ‘best villain’ and not even dictionaries would support it. The main issue is in the ‘best’ but even in what he sees villainy as. He confuses it with prowess alone.
- He simply outright lies about some aspects of GF and SG.
- His idea of ‘depth’ is merely how many fake masks one can wear, rather than actual depth. This has led to a complete misunderstanding of which villain has most depth.
- He ignored a major point I made about legacy and basically completely dropped the case, instead relying on a new thing called ‘fear factor’ which I will actually partly concede to and explain why LS suits horror better than drama-thriller which is what BB is meant to be.
I shall now proceed to explore them without retyping what they are.
1: oversimplifying characters
According to Pro, GF has only 2 ‘modes’ of being where LS has many. Apparently GF has only his apparently fake nice mask with ‘customer service’ and his ruthless kingpin persona.
This is completely false but I respect that Pro is misled rather than intentionally lying. Gus has significant depth to him if one pays close attention, in fact a lot more depth than LS who is actually closer to what Pro says GF is.
I don’t even think it’s simple to just call GF a psychopath. He presents as one but isn’t. He’s a sociopath instead and has masked deep emotions he still has present. If we analyse what he has with Mike Ermentraut as well as with one of his Chicken place employees, Lyle, GF actually is deeply emotional. It would, after all, be psychologically implausible for him to be as cold as Pro says and to then risk his entire empire on a vengeance quest for his gay lover that the Salamancas and Eladio think was just his old business partner.
What GF shows in the series is a variety. He may seem he is faking the nice part entirely but even that is carefully crafted. Instead, he’s terrified to let people in. This is in direct contrast to LS who I believe is a genuine full psychopath and doesn’t have genuine love as a capability of himself psychologically.
I believe GF also actually doesn’t see Law Enforcement as entirely dispensible. He seems to have a lot of complexity to him and I sincerely mean a lot. If you analyse how GF handled Hank and others, he seems to go beyond just masking and acting fake-nice with cops. He is a genuinely conservative-valued man at heart and seems to have an actual fondness for law enforcers. He does absolutely everything possible to ensure the least amount of cops ever get hurt in what goes down. We can chalk this up to merely being careful, as per Pro’s logic, however I think it’s something more and deeper. After all, GF easily could have handled Hank how the Neonazis did later. Part of why I am sure this is true is that GF chose Mike, an ex-cop. Yes, he was somewhat dirty and an ex-cop not a current but GF seems to have a depth to him even beyond just personality traits. Deep down he realises how filthy and terrible those he associates with are for society and SG has the same dilemma and depth. They both know deep down there’s something corrupt and wrong about the side they’re on but for SG survival and for GF revenge are primary motives that keep them enslaved to keep siding with the monsters. In contrast, LS literally is one of the monsters no if and no but.
2: arbitrarily decided what defines ‘best villain’
The best villain according to Pro seems to be the one that is simply scariest. It clearly comes about in his ‘fear factor’ argument later that because Lalo for Pro, induced most direct fear during his scenes on a consistent basis, that this makes him the best villain.
GF is scary in a literal sense, meaning that other characters fear him as much as LS or potentially more. As Pro points out, LS feared GF from day 1 or at least respected him as a highly formidable threat. Let’s not forget that in the end GF himself ended up killing LS.
The definition of best villain, in my eyes, is the villain that has the most overall incredible depth and legacy in the series. This could apply just as easily to ‘best hero’ or ‘best’ any subcategory of character except maybe a very specific niche where for instance being ‘best sidekick’ may actually mean how well the character supports the character he/she is a sidekick to.
The definition of a villain in the context of this debate is either:
- a bad person who harms other people or breaks the law
- a character in a book, play, film, etc. who harms other people
dictionary.cambridge.org
These definitions work better than the typical ‘opposed to protagonist’ dynamic since in BB and BCS that simply categorically does not work.
The definition of ‘best’ which applies here is:
- of the highest quality, or being the most suitable, pleasing, or effective type of thing or person:
dictionary.cambridge.org
So, what really we are trying to establish is who harms other people, breaks the law and/or simply entertains while doing so, in the highest quality and most suitable, pleasant and effective manner.
To Pro, being ‘scary’ and formidable matter yet GF kills Lalo and SG outlives almost all villains throughout both series.
In fact, SG is incredibly unique because he is consistently bullied and hunted down by other villains yet consistently outlives them even pitting them against each other at times or at least utilising when they are pitted against each other.
LS may be good at what he does, but GF and SG are better at what they do and that’s just a fact.
If LS were better at what he did even ignoring the fact he gets killed, he’d have been ranked and feared like Hector or Tuco. Instead, barely anyone knows who he is. Now, Pro may argue that’s because he’s based mainly in Mexico and had to be extra careful in US as he’s a criminal. Regardless of the ‘why’, the fact is LS relative to Salamancas was not the most truly harmful, it’s pretty indisputable that Hector was. LS is actually an antivillain at times because he indeed isn’t willing to be ‘pure carnage’. He has a layer of rationality to him which is probably his single redeeming quality as a character morally speaking.
One minute Pro applauds Lalo’s careful intelligence, the next he states we’re dealing with a pure evil lunatic and that this makes him amazing. The reality is that what Pro actually is trying to admire in LS is his depth yet GF and SG have more of that.
outright lies
Lalo is the first and only villain to not underestimate Gus Fring.
What?
Not only does LS objectively underestimate GF as GF kills him but I never even suggested that LS was the only one to fear GF. Many characters feared GF. I said almost all villains either significantly feared him, underestimated him or both.
Characters who didn't underestimate GF are plentiful.
They include Nacho, Mike, Hank, the other Chemist Jesse ends up killing off, Saul and plenty more.
To suggest LS is the only character to not underestimate GF is absurd. Even Eladio almost didn't. Predicting that GF would self-poison to ensure Eladio gets poisoned and that he'd run away to puke it up, put himself inches from death and trust in a later dialysis to save him was something a bit unfair to demand Eladio to have seen coming.
GF was at times very underestimated, especially by Walter White (WW) and Hector. However, to suggest LS was unique for seeing him as a threat is simply false. Jesse in fact had a far higher appreciation for what a threat GF was than WW for some reason. GF wasn't simply easy to underestimate if you were in the drug world.
And if we want to discuss characters who got understimated a lot, SG takes the cake. Slippin' Jimmy (McGill) was consistently seen as easy prey.
Another major lie is that GF froze in fear. He did not freeze in fear, he froze as he predicted that LS wouldn't shoot him at that exact moment and was thinking about his next moves. If he had moved at all, LS would have shot him. I am not denying GF has plot armour but let's just look at this:
Watch this for a bit then skip to 1:29 and watch some seconds more
This is one of the most ridiculous cartoonish things BB and BCS ever did with any character. The reality is that LS is more akin to a comic book villain or horror movie villain. We enter almost sci-fi level telepathy, psychic powers and teleportation powers with him.
In contrast, GF and SG represent a struggle to maintain a facade needed to get by in both a criminal world and law-abiding (or in SG's case law-representing) way.
Also, If GF or SG had done that, they'd have left that guy alive but tied up and gagged. LS killed him and it's almost a negligible part of the scene.
skip to 7:45 or so
The way GF could bring out 'obedience' and reward it in both his non-criminal world and criminal alike is a skill LS fundamentally lacked. Almost all underlings of LS loathed him and secretly plotted against him. In contrast, GF and SG understood how to breed actual loyalty (for SG it stretched from Kim through to Huell and Patrick.
GF and SG had underlings they could genuinely turn their back on and rely on. They really, truly did. LS didn't other than his relatives and even they were largely sociopaths that would betray him if they could.
The entire fan theory of LS being gay is just pure fan fiction. GS is portrayed directly as a closeted homosexual in BCS even more so than BB. It adds a layer to him that Pro pretends LS had. I don't know if he was gay or bi but it's pure hearsay. For all we know he's asexual and only can get a thrill from threatening and hurting others.
